What is Coplanarity?

Coplanarity measures the offset between multiple terminals (such as leads or solder balls) and a reference plane (e.g., a three-high-point plane or an offset regression plane). Coplanarity inspection is vital for assessing the alignment of terminals in semiconductor devices. Poor coplanarity in surface-mount devices can lead to issues like insufficient solder paste, causing weak soldering, or excessive paste, resulting in short circuits.

What is Warpage?

Warpage reflects the bending or twisting deformation of a product due to external conditions. It is expressed as the flatness error per unit length within a plane, typically in percentage terms. Warpage inspection is commonly commonly used to evaluate finished printed circuit boards (PCBs), including single-sided, double-sided, multilayer, rigid, or flexible boards. Excessive warpage can cause misalignment, making it difficult to insert components into PCB holes or surface-mount pads, potentially damaging automated assembly machines.

What is Flatness?

Flatness refers to the deviation of a substrate’s macroscopic concave-convex height from an ideal plane. The tolerance zone is the area between two parallel planes separated by the tolerance value t. Flatness, a type of form error, is critical for smooth, continuous surfaces in materials like plastics, metals, and machined parts. Accurate flatness inspection ensures proper assembly and functionality of components.
